Monique Hellenger

Jazz vocalist

Native to Cape Town, Monique Hellenberg is one of the city's most well known up-and-coming young jazz vocalists.

Monique completed a Bachelor of Music Degree in Jazz Vocal Performance at the University of Cape Town in 2004 and recently won a full music scholarship to study abroad. She is a versatile performer, and appears regularly with some of Cape Town's most respected jazz bands, including "Breakfast Included" and UCT Jazz Piano Lecturer, Andrew Lilley.

Monique has also featured in 60's/'70's shows and everything in between. She is the lead female vocalist for popular Afro-Cuban salsa band, "Maquina Loca", singing a predominantly Spanish repertoire.

Monique is a member of jazz vocal groups, "Mamavox" and "Track 5", and has been a featured vocalist with the "Jonny Cooper Orchestra". She has also recently featured in the fresh original funk/jazz/afro/R&B band, the "James Kibby Project".

Monique features on various recordings, including Breakfast Included's latest album, "Night Work Ahead" and The James Kibby Project's debut album, "Nowhere To Hide" as well as the newly released album of children's music entitled, "Songs of Africa".

She was recently awarded the SAMRO Best Jazz Vocalist award, for best jazz vocalist in South Africa.

Monique also teaches jazz voice part-time and works as a session musicians at various studios around Cape Town.
