Kolelo

Afro-beat, Kwassa Kwassa and Chimurenga

At Kolelo, in Nguu, Tanganyika Territory, Central Tanzania, there is a cave haunted by the spirit of a great mganga who was once a chief in Ukami. The heads of the Wadoe and neighbouring tribes would come there to pray for rain during times of drought. Today, Kolelo is a spiritual haven where the pure come to summon their ancestors.

From Mozambique to the DRC, Tanzania to South Africa, Kolelo is African: the relentless groove, that infectious rhythm; that get-up-and-dance feelgood-ness that unites us all.

Fusing Afro-beat, Kwassa Kwassa and Chimurenga, this 6-piece has played to packed audiences at major venues throughout as well as major festivals including Cape Town Festival 2007 and Obsfest 2006/7.

Singer Adeson is a towering force. A playful warrior in his traditional Tanzanian composure, with so many beautiful compositions to write and stories to tell. Texito is the master drummer from Maputo, who knows no boundaries when it comes to playing with the sticks. Daniel is a re-Africanised African, his skill likened to "a native West African virtuoso on the guitar" (overtone.co.za). Xixel has groove running down her veins, singing like a latter-day Nina Simone meets Angelique Kidjo. Nelson is the man with the keys from DRC and the kwassa kwassa in his soul. Sylvain is the bass maestro who knows music that moves.

Kolelo is pure energy.
